Publication in New Journal of Chemistry

Two isostructural tetranuclear M(II)4 complexes with the general formula [M4(L)4(CH3OH)2], where H2L = 2-{(E)-[(2-hydroxyphenyl)imino]methyl}phenol, were prepared and characterized. Their magnetic properties were studied experimentally (magnetometry) and theoretically (CASSCF and DFT calculations). It was revealed that in the Ni4 compound the antiferromagnetic coupling dominates, whereas in the Co4 compound the ferromagnetic coupling leads to the large spin ground state. Furthermore, the Co(II) compound behaves as a zero-field single molecule magnet.
